What Are The Major Causes Behind Prostate Cancer?

Dr. Kenneth Scott Koeneman, MD
During the early stages of prostate cancer, no prominent symptoms are observed mostly which makes the diagnosis quite difficult. Doctors still fail to maintain a consensus on what really causes prostate cancer. Though there are a number of factors that are held responsible by different doctors for giving rise to prostate cancer

How does prostate cancer begin?

Cancer mostly begins in the glandular cells. Some minor changes start to take place in glandular cells. Remember that this does not take place suddenly, rather it is a slow and time-taking process. Symptoms become evident only when cancer begins to grow. If identified before metastasis, prostate cancer can be treated effectively. Though if it reaches its later stages, treatment becomes tougher and more complex.

Just like in other kinds of cancers, the major cause behind prostate cancer is still not identified. This may be caused by being exposed to toxic materials present in the environment. Cancerous cells grow a result of mutations in the DNA. Due to these mutations, the cells begin to grow rapidly and in an abnormal manner. This, in turn, gives rise to the development of a tumor. There are some factors that make you more vulnerable to prostate cancer. Some of them are family history with cancer, environment, diet, age factor, etc.

Age factor:

The age factor is another major factor. Young men are not as likely to get affected as old ones. In the majority of cases, old men become the victims of this disease. The greater the age, the greater the probability of cancer.

Diet:

Diet plays an important part in giving rise to cancer. Today we ignore consuming a lot of healthy food as we are more obsessed with and like to consume unhealthy food. The overconsumption of unhealthy food can gives rise to many dangerous diseases like prostate cancer.

Environment:

The environment is another important aspect because we have a number of toxic elements involved with air and when we breathe we may inhale those toxic elements and end up developing cancer in the body.

Dr. Kenneth S Koeneman, MD

The most important fact that must be stated here is that only men have a prostate. The prostate is basically a gland which is quite small in size. Its size can be compared to the size of a walnut. It is located under the bladder and normally surrounds urethra. The most significant thing to mention here is that this causes several urination issues.

How to determine if you have Prostate Cancer?

The first and foremost thing is to focus on the symptoms. The major problem in this regard is that the symptoms are not very clear and they are not enough in the earlier stages of the identification. In addition to it, most of the symptoms are similar to that of the symptoms of UTI.

It is suggested to have a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels tested if we take the opinion of the doctors into account. This will help in early identification and the concerned doctor will be able to deal with it through minimal intervention. High PSA levels are indicative of prostate cancer and most of the men with such results are advised to have a biopsy.  There are a number of treatments out there like surgery and radiations.

Why is biopsy in this case not recommended?

A biopsy is not recommended by a number of doctors as there is a risk of spread of the disease to other parts of the body. The major problem is that a biopsy leads to dormant cancer. The PSA test is an exceptional step in this regard as it is the best technique to figure out prostate cancer.

The significance of PSA tests:

The PSA test basically tells you regarding the levels of prostate antigen that is present in the blood of a man. It is debated that it can show such results owing to certain inflammation and it does not always give the right results. Well, whatever the case is, it is important to identify this disease as soon as possible as it can cause a number of issues as well.
